Organellar RNA editing is a transgenomic remedy of fixed mutations. In a study of two closely related mosses, Funaria and Physcomitrella, we find that (i) Funaria lacks three mitochondrial RNA editing positions present in Physcomitrella, (ii) that Funaria contains nine clear orthologues of Physcomitrella PPR-DYW editing proteins, (iii) that the “missing” 10th DYW protein in Funaria is responsible for two mitochondrial editing sites in Physcomitrella lacking in Funaria.
