Emerging biomedical applications of synthetic biology

Synthetic biology is strongly gaining impact in the development of novel biomedical approaches to address unmet needs in the Health sector. Here we provide an overview of how synthetic biology enables to understand the molecular basis of disease, to prevent diseases or to discover new drugs. We further describe how next-generation cell- and gene-based synthetic biological approaches might contribute to overcome widespread diseases in a patient-compliant manner.
