Pentagone: patrolling BMP morphogen signaling

A comprehensive review of recent findings on a novel, evolutionarily conserved, extracellular regulator of BMP signaling, Pentagone (PENT). We speculate on the molecular basis of the ability of the protein to regulate long-range morphogen signaling in the Drosophila wing disc epithelium. In addition, we discuss the relevance of placing PENT´s production under direct transcriptional control of morphogen signaling and the potential benefits of this additional regulatory feedback loop.
