Distinct groups of dopaminergic (DA) neurons develop at defined anatomical sites in the brain to modulate function of local and far-ranging circuits. To define the molecular identity for all DA groups, we analyzed regional expression of transcription factors in the larval zebrafish brain and determined co-expression with the Tyrosine hydroxylase marker. We define sets of transcription factors that clearly identify each DA group. These data establish molecular codes for DA neurons and confirm postulated relations to DA groups defined for mammalian systems.
