Accurate description of biological prcesses requires high precision measurement of cellular parameters. In this BIOSS publication, three BIOSS groups (Schamel, Ronneberger, Timmer) developed an approach in which cellular data from 3D confocal microscopy and 2D high?resolution transmission electron microscopy were combined. In conjunction with bioinformatics an unbiased estimate of surface areas with high accuracy were achieved. We have determined the volumes and surface areas of the cells and nuclei of six different immune cell types and the results of this interdisciplinary research is given in the publication.
