Dpp/BMP signaling in flies: From molecules to biology

Signaling by evolutionarily conserved TGFß/BMP ligands controls a vast number of processes during organ and tissue development and homeostasis. Here, we critically review recent developments and findings on BMP signaling in Drosophila, a prime model organism for deciphering TGFß/BMP signaling. We emphasize on transcriptional responses and switches that underlie target gene regulation, on feedback circuitry of the pathway and on the impact of graded BMP signaling in growth, patterning and scaling during organogenesis.
