Compartmentation is a fundamental feature of eukaryotic cells and the basis for metabolic complexity. We report on a multi-level approach on plastid and mitochondrial proteomes revealing novel information on putative contact sites between organelles as well as on the evolutionary plasticity of protein targeting. Due to its ability for homologous recombination and its high amenability to confocal microscopy, the moss Physcomitrella patens is introduced as a model system for organellar dynamics and signalling.
