Preface to special issue on nanoscale membrane organisations.

An international symposium on “Nanoscale Membrane Organisation” that was organized by BIOSS from the 24th to 25th October 2013. At this meeting it was agreed to organise a special issue of the international journal BBA - Molecular Cell Research entitled “Nanoscale Membrane Organisation and Signalling”. This was done by Balbino Alarcon, Michael Reth and Wolfgang Schamel who all participated in this meeting. In this special issue we discuss new developments in our understanding of how membrane proteins and lipids are organized in biomembranes, with a focus on the plasma membrane and proteins involved in signalling.
