For more than two decades, the moss P. patens has been developed as a plant model for comparative and signalling studies as well as a safe production system for biotechnology. The establishment of genomic resources has culminated in the role as a reference for plant evolution. We provide an overview and history of the established genomic resources and summarize the current knowledge about the genome structure and gene content including codon usage bias, repeats and transposable elements.
