This review provides a comprehensive overview of the protein import apparatus of mitochondria. Mitochondria have to import more than 1,000 different proteins from the cytosol. Recent studies revealed that the protein import translocases do not function as independent units but are integrated into a network of machineries that control biogenesis, function and dynamics of mitochondria.
