Epithelial patterning is essential for organ formation and precedes morphogenesis. We introduce the Drosophila follicular epithelium (a sheet of cells that surround the developing oocyte and will eventually form the eggshell) as an excellent system to study epithelial patterning at multiple levels including signaling integration and gene regulatory networks. In addition, we discuss mechanisms that account for the morphological diversity of Drosophila eggshells thus contributing to evolutionary diversification.
