Dithiol disulphide exchange in redox regulation of chloroplast enzymes in response to evolutionary and structural constraints

Redox regulation is an evolutionary deeply conserved signalling mechanism that effectively controls cellular processes. Especially in chloroplasts, redox-dependent thioredoxin systems play a major role in plant yield and survival. In our review article we provide an overview of the evolutionary appearance of redox-targeted enzymes in plastids. We focus on the questions when and how regulatory dithiol reduction evolved and discuss in detail the structural mechanisms behind it.
