Fibrosis is accompanied by significant changes in tissue mechanics. Using light-tunable hydrogels, we show that the pro-fibrotic response of human atrial fibroblasts in response to substrate stiffness can be tuned by cell contact-mediated and paracrine communication between fibroblast populations.
