Start-up ideas from BIOSS projects receive 2nd and 3rd prize at “Startinsland” contest

On 23 July 2014, the University of Freiburg awarded two founding ideas that have emerged from research in the research group of Prof. Dr. Wilfried Weber of the Cluster of Excellence BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies.

From 32 idea sketches three entries were awarded in the categories of "scientific innovations" and "other innovative start-up projects." The winning teams receive prizes of 2,500 euros in total.

The second prize went to the start-up project "Bionicure". Dr. Adrian Sprenger, Sabrina Wend and Hanna Wagner develop a vaccine depot technology, in which a vaccine is injected once and can be released several times by a tablet. This makes only a single visit to the doctor sufficient.

The project won the Innovation Award of German Biotechnology Days in spring 2014.

In third place came the founding idea "Nanoclin" by Dr. Andreas Menzel, Dr. Konrad Müller and Claire Chatelle. The team developed a nanosensor test, which measures concentrations of active agents in the blood like a blood sugar test. It could be used to improve drug treatments.

"These two projects emanated from research in the Signalhaus. With this kind of founding ideas we hope to be faster in bringing promising developments to medical application," Weber explains.
