An award for scientific publications: The BIOSS “Writer Prize” for the most prolific writer of the past year goes to Prof. Dr. Oliver Einsle from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Freiburg. He published two articles each in Nature and Science in 2011 and achieved the highest impact factor of all members of BIOSS.

Prof. Dr. Michael Reth, Scientific Director of BIOSS, commended Oliver Einsle for his efforts and presented him with the “Writer,” a wooden figurine carved by Professor Dr. Hans G. Kleinig. The artist himself was at the award ceremony and expressed his pleasure that his “Writer” finds a place each year in the office of a successful researcher. Hans G. Kleinig is well aware of the significance of publications in Nature und Science from his time as a scientist: He served as professor of cellular biology at the Institute of Biology II of the University of Freiburg until 2004. He has been carving wooden figures for 25 years in his free time, some of them up to one-and-a-half meters in size, and has displayed his artworks at numerous exhibitions.

The Cluster of Excellence BIOSS awards research funds to its members each year on the basis of the Performance Oriented Grants Option (POGO) System and honors its most successful member with the Writer Prize. In 2011 the award went to Oliver Einsle, and in 2010 to Michael Reth.
