BIOSS celebrates the topping out of its new building Signalhaus Freiburg

The construction of BIOSS’s new building on Schänzlestraße in Freiburg near the Institutes of Biology II and III and the Center for Biological Systems Analysis (ZBSA) is well underway. When the building is complete, it will have three storeys, a cellar and roughly 2,600 square metres of floor space for BIOSS’s laboratories, classrooms and offices. On 3 November, BIOSS celebrated the construction of its new building with a traditional topping out ceremony with many guests and short speeches.

The building itself will be called Signalhaus Freiburg and will reflect BIOSS’s focus on research in biological signalling in and between cells. The building’s construction is costing roughly €14m and is funded by the University of Freiburg, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal and state economic stimulus package.

Signalhaus Freiburg will unite the many units of BIOSS which are currently housed in different locations, thus making communication easier.

The Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, promised to give BIOSS a good coffee machine when the building opens.

Baden Württemberg’s Minister of Finance, Willi Stächele, and the Department Head of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, Klaus Tappeser, were also at the celebration and stressed how the new BIOSS building will help to make the Life Sciences in Freiburg, which are already at the top of international research, even better.

The Mayor of Freiburg, Dr. Dieter Salomon, said a few words of welcome at the ceremony, and the Scientific Director of BIOSS, Prof. Dr. Michael Reth, welcomed everyone to come and visit BIOSS in Signalhaus Freiburg when it opens, adding "You'll be hearing from us!"
