Roland Zengerle, the Vice Executive Director of BIOSS, has been elected a member of Leopoldina
Prof Dr Roland Zengerle, who serves on the executive board at BIOSS, was elected to Leopoldina. Founded in 1652, Leopoldina is the oldest academy of the natural sciences and medicine in Germany and has the longest continuing history for an academy of its kind in the world. Leopoldina was appointed Germany's National Academy of the Sciences in 2008. In this advisory function, it provides scientific expertise to the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Academy’s members write reports and recommendations regarding scientific issues and conduct their work in ad hoc commissions and working groups.
Leopoldina has roughly 1,300 members from all over the world. Three fourths of its members are from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland while one fourth comes from 30 different countries. Its members are scientists and researchers with outstanding achievements in the natural sciences and medicine as well as in the related fields of cultural studies, social studies, engineering, the humanities, and behavioural science.
Roland Zengerle is one of the founding members of BIOSS and has been its deputy executive director since it became a cluster of excellence. He has always been closely involved in the Centre’s affairs and goals. Professor Zengerle is also head of the Laboratory for MEMS Applications at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg.
