With colourful proteins, phosphatases and kinases, BIOSS’s signalling game was a hit with kids young and old at the Wissenschaftsmarkt science fair.
The square around Freiburg's Minster was crowded on 8 - 9 July 2011. More than 10,000 visitors came to find out more about the mysteries of science at this fun and interesting event. The University of Freiburg and Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe (the city’s office of commerce, tourism and trade fairs, FWTM) organised the science fair, whose motto was “Amazing Science: Learning and Doing” (“Wissen. Staunen. Mitmachen”). The event took place in the heart of the city and was a platform for scientists from the University of Freiburg and other universities and companies from the region to present their latest research projects.
BIOSS took the “learning through playing” approach: Through comics on posters, a quiz and a signalling game, children, teenagers and adults could visualize and understand how the process of signalling works.
BIOSS’s stand at the fair was popular with the crowd. | Kids young and old learned how signalling processes work in the signalling game. |
Red, yellow and green: The players competed against each other as phosphateses, proteins and kinases. | The game ended with the question: Has the correct number of phosphates been transmitted? |
BIOSS members demonstrated the role of signalling processes in the human body. | Posters illustrated the importance of cells and proteins. Visitors tested their knowledge in the BIOSS Quiz. |
