We present a novel type of abiotically catalysed implantable glucose fuel cell with anode and cathode placed side by side, using a Raney-platinum glucose oxidation anode with high tolerance towards oxygen. This design is advantageous in terms of simplified fabrication and reduced overall thickness, facilitating implementation as power supplying coating onto medical implants. With adjusted proportions of anode and cathode areas a power density of 3.0 ± 0.3 µW cm-2 was obtained.
