The genome of the first vascular non-seed plant, Selaginella, is expected to yield insight into how plants evolved over the past 500 million years. The genome, with about 22,300 genes, is relatively small. Selaginella is the only known plant not to have experienced a polyploidy event. In comparing this genome sequence with others, genes were identified that are present only in vascular plants and genes present only in flowering plants. These genes likely played important roles in the early evolution of plants.
