The moss Physcomitrella contains high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids that can be metabolized to oxylipins. Cyclopentenone-oxylipines act as signalling molecules and are synthesized by conversion of a fatty acid hydroperoxide to an allene oxide, a step catalyzed by allene oxide synthase (AOS). Two AOS isoforms were characterized with regard to substrate specificity and subcellular localization. Their functions were inferred from targeted deletion mutants.
