This article presents a new, facile electrochemical fabrication process for platinum electrodes with extreme roughness factors (ratio of catalyst surface to footprint area) of higher than 3000. The process is based on multiple alternations of PtCu-codeposition and Cu-dealloying. Besides structure analysis, we show how this process can be used to fabricate anode as well as cathode for implantable fuel cells with reaction-specificity for glucose oxidation and O2 reduction, respectively.
