Protein therapeutics represent an increasing area in the pharmaceutical industry. Plants gain acceptance as attractive alternatives for high-quality protein production. In the moss Physcomitrella patens glycoengineering is feasible to eliminate planttypical N-glycosylation. Now, via precise gene targeting of galactosyltransferase and fucosyltransferase genes, we completely abolished the formation of undesired Lewis A-type glycan epitopes on moss-produced recombinant human erythropoietin.
