The review focuses on micropumps applying osmotic principles to provide constant (zero-order) drug release rates and to enable drug delivery systems of smallest size for a broad field of new applications. Three main building types (one, two and multicompartment) are discussed with systems for long term use and parenteral routes of administration to target drug delivery either
in a site-specific or systemic way not limited by gastrointestinal transit time or first-pass metabolism.
