Sensing mitochondrial homeostasis: the protein import machinery takes control

We discuss recent findings that the mitochondrial protein import machinery is tightly embedded in signalling pathways that sense mitochondrial dysfunction and transfer these signals in nuclear stress responses to rescue the organelle or induce mitophagy to eliminate them. We propose a role of phosphorylation in this process.
