During embryogenesis, the body plan of an organism develops from a unicellular zygote. In most flowering plants, the zygote divides asymmetrically, determining the apical–basal axis of the embryo. The molecular mechanisms of how the zygote polarizes and how this polarity is linked to embryo axis formation have been obscure, mainly due to the difficulties to access the zygote. We review recent findings in Arabidopsis and novel approaches to analyze zygote development in various plant species.
