Patterning of epithelial tissues is cardinal for subsequent morphogenesis and organogenesis. Here we study pattern formation in Drosophila follicle cells by dissecting expression patterns that integrate inductive information from two morphogen signaling gradients (BMP and EGF). We establish that dynamics of expression patterns do not only depend on changes in signaling input but also on the dynamic utilization of different cis regulatory modules. In addition, our genetic and biochemical analysis provide first molecular links between graded EGF signaling and gene regulation.
