An important factor in the architecture of a root system is the position and rate of branching which is triggered by specific environmental conditions to optimize the supply of water and nutrients to the rest of the plant. An exciting example of how an integrated experimental and mathematical approach has helped to order the signaling modules which guide lateral root emergence is presented by Peret et al. (2013).
