How transcription factors genetically specify axonal pathfinding mechanisms in the CNS has remained a challenging open topic in neurobiology. This study provides first insights into the mechanisms that accomplish long distance migration of growth cones navigating along the longitudinal axis through territories of varying concentrations of guidance cues. Sim1a and Arnt2 regulate receptor expression during hypothalamo-spinal longitudinal growth navigation to ensure proper lateral positioning.
