Drosophila eggshell formation is an emerging model for the study of epithelial patterning and graded morphogen signaling elicited by BMP and EGF ligands. The present work identifies an essential role of the BMP type II receptor WIT, the Drosophila homolog to BMPR-II, in mediating BMP signaling during eggshell formation. In addition, the study identifies a feed-forward regulatory loop, in which BMP signaling activates the transcription of WIT.
