Beta-barrel membrane proteins are composed of multiple antiparallel beta-strands and form pores in the outer membranes of endosymbiotic organelles like mitochondria and the evolutionary related Gram-negative bacteria. In mitochondria beta-barrel proteins are inserted into the outer membrane by the sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) and in bacteria by the beta-barrel assembly machinery (BAM).
