In the iGEM2013 competition the PhyscoFilter project of the TU Munich Team won a Gold Medal and was awarded Best Environment Project. The moss Physcomitrella patens was utilized to develop a membrane anchoring system facilitating the expression and localization of various functional proteins in the apoplast. In this artificial reaction compartment, various biotechnological applications, like the removal of pollutants in aquatic environments and thus improvement of global water quality, are enabled.
