JNK-signaling widely activates apoptosis in response to cellular stress. However, in many contexts, tha same pathway is required for morphogenetic processes that exclude apoptosis. Using Drosophila as a model, we show that JNK-induced BMP signaling directly represses JNK-dependent activation of a proapoptotic gene. This incoherent feed-forward network diverts JNK signaling output from apoptosis induction to morphogenesis.
