In the moss Physcomitrella patens, cells at the wound margin of detached leaves become reprogrammed into stem cells. Two paralogous WUSCHEL-related homeobox 13-like (PpWOX13L) genes are required for cell growth during stem cell formation. ppwox13l deletion mutants fail to express cell wall loosening factors. Most ppwox13l zygotes fail to expand and initiate an apical stem cell. PpWOX13L genes have analagous WOX stem cell function in seed plants, but use a different cellular mechanism.
