This is the first report on the recombinant production of a candidate vaccine in the moss system. A multi-epitope protein from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus based on epitopes from gp120 and gp41, named poly-HIV, was designed and produced in moss. Immunization with plant extracts expressing the poly-HIV protein elicited specific antibodies in mice, reflecting the immunogenic potential of this moss-derived HIV antigen.
