We use ovarian follicle cells of Drosophila as a genetically tractable system to understand signal interpretation and integration in vivo. We define a molecular and genetic hierarchy that connects TGFß/BMP signalling to target gene regulation and delineate a multi-step cascade of transcriptional repression linking inductive signalling to epithelial patterning and morphological output.
