Aldosterone increases sodium reabsorption and blood pressure via activation of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in renal epithelial cells. Anyhow, aldosterone also directly exerts deleterious effects in the cardiovascular system. Evidence from recent experimental studies strongly supports the hypothesis that MR in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells are decisive mediators of cardiovascular remodeling translation risk factors into disease.
