A first field trial was conducted to validate the potential of a Sphagnum palustre clone, a peat moss derived from a single spore and grown in a bioreactor, for monitoring air pollution. The performance of this clone was superior to a moss that was hitherto used as a sensitive bioaccumulator regarding uptake capacity and accumulation signal.
