AWD regulates timed activation of BMP signaling in intestinal stem cells to maintain tissue homeostasis

Intestinal stem cells (ISC) maintain gut integrity under normal conditions or after damage. In Drosophila, BMP signaling controls gut regeneration by first activating ISC proliferation and, subsequently, by mediating ISC return to quiescence. The switch is regulated by the differential availability of the BMP receptor Tkv, which undergoes proteasomal degradation at homeostasis. Tissue damage inhibits proteasomal activity and induces nucleoside diphosphate kinase, AWD, to activate Tkv internalization, BMP/Tkv signaling and return to quiescence.
