What determines the sorting of closely related membrane proteins to either the ER or mitochondria?

The biogenesis of membrane proteins is essential for signaling processes. One central question is how very similar transmembrane domains of ER- and mitochondrial proteins ensure targeting to the correct compartment. We aim to understand how the interplay between nascent membrane proteins, the ribosome, and ribosome-bound protein biogenesis factors impact on the fidelity of protein sorting.
