BIOSS Research Area C: Re-building & biotechnology

Area C Coordinator: Prof. Barbara Di Ventura

The combination of engineering, chemistry and biology, which was made possible by the BIOSS Cluster of Excellence from its very foundation, enables to study basic biological signalling processes as well as to use this knowledge to develop diagnostic and medical tools. BIOSS area C aims to develop and apply synthetic biological, chemical and engineering strategies to rebuild and analyse biological signalling processes. Area C researchers apply synthetic biology approaches to study signalling, for instance by constructing minimal receptors. Area C is also engaged in biosensor generation, bio-inspired, intelligent materials, novel delivery vehicles and generally applicable biotechnological methods. In this area, researchers from the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, as well as from the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg engage in close collaborations that will be intensified further in the future.
